Constant communication and navigation

When spacecraft go really far from Earth, they go past the Global Positioning System and communication satellites. To talk with mission control in Houston, Orion's communication and navigation systems switch from NASA's usual system to the Deep Space Network. Orion has extra systems just in case the main ones don't work. There's a backup navigation system, kind of like a new technology using a camera to take pictures of Earth, the Moon, and stars. It figures out where Orion is by looking at these pictures. The backup emergency communication system also doesn't depend on the main system, making sure the spacecraft can still send important data even if something goes wrong.

Radiation protection

When a spacecraft goes beyond Earth's magnetic field, it faces more radiation from charged particles and solar storms. This radiation can mess up important stuff like computers and equipment. For people on board, too much radiation can cause problems from feeling sick right away to maybe getting cancer later on. Orion was made with special features to make sure its important parts can still work during these radiation events. It has four computers that check themselves, plus a completely different backup computer, so it can still follow commands even if something goes wrong. Engineers tested everything really well to make sure all the important systems can still work even in really tough situations. Orion also has a kind of emergency shelter below where the crew hangs out. If there's a big solar radiation event, NASA has plans for the crew to make a temporary shelter inside using stuff they have on board.

Systems to live and breathe

The things that keep people alive on long trips in space need to work really well and not take up too much space or be too heavy. The cool systems on Orion, the spaceship, are built to handle the challenges of deep space travel. They're testing this smart thing on the space station to keep the inside of Orion dry. Inside the spaceship, they're saving space too. Without this gear, they'd need room for 127 basketballs worth of chemical canisters, which is like 32 cubic feet. That's a lot, and it would use up 10% of where the crew lives. So, this new thing is making it all fit better. Also, Orion has a smaller toilet than the one on the space station. It's just a bit smaller, but it helps keep things compact and comfy.
